Borrowing Items

Borrowing from the NS Library

All items available for check out can be picked up and returned at the Library Service Desk. Please see the information below for borrowing eligibility.  If you are looking for borrowing information on technology items, please see our Borrow Technology page.  

NS Students, Staff, and Faculty:

To check out materials, including books, course reserves, and tech items, you will need your Scorpion Card, or your student ID number and a state-issued ID.    

UNLV and CSN Students, Staff, and Faculty: 

Patrons affiliated with the University of Nevada Las Vegas or the College of Southern Nevada have the same borrowing privileges as NS patrons on NS Library materials, with the exception of Course Reserves and technology lending.  UNLV and CSN patrons should bring their student ID number and a state-issued ID, or their institution's ID card.  UNLV and CSN patrons may access NS Library databases and other online resources in person only by visiting the Marydean Martin Library and using a guest pass for on-site computer access.  Please see the NS Library service desk for assistance when you arrive.  Please see our Course Reserves, Tech Lending, and Study Room policies. 

Community Members: 

Members of the local community do not have book or technology borrowing privileges at Nevada State at this time.  

Books

The NS Library has a modest, off-site print collection called the Library Annex.  To request a print book, search Library Search, and select Request.  You must be logged in to request books.  Delivery from the Library Annex can be expected within two business days. You will receive an email when your book is ready for pickup at the library service desk. Requested books are held for one week for pickup.

Media and DVD Items

The NS Library has a variety of media and DVD items available for checkout.

NS, UNLV, and CSN students, part-time instructors, faculty, and staff may borrow NS Media & DVD items.  Media items are not available for Community Borrowers to checkout.

Checking Out, Renewing, and Returning Items

Materials may be renewed in person at any circulation desk, by telephone or online through My Account. Checked out items that have been requested by another user may not be renewed.  

Return books to the Library service desk. Books checked out from UNLV or CSN libraries may also be returned to the Library service desk.

Overdue and Billed Items

Patrons are expected to return all library materials by the due date listed on their library account. Patrons can view the due dates for items they have checked out by logging into their library account. If unable to return items, please contact the Service Desk before the items become overdue to discuss options, including possible renewal.  

Items not returned will be billed to the patron.  This is charged to the patron’s MyNevadaState account and may be paid at the Cashier’s office.  A library block will also be placed on the patron’s account. 

You will receive overdue notices at the email listed in your MyNevadaState account. 

You are still responsible for items, even if you do not receive the overdue notices. 

Using UNLV and CSN Libraries

NS students, faculty and staff can use their Scorpion Card to borrow books and other materials from UNLV and CSN Libraries.  For borrowing privileges at these institutions, please see the following pages on the respective institution’s website: 

Requesting Books from UNLV or CSN for Delivery to Nevada State:

In Library Search, select “Advanced Search” to the right of the search bar. You will then be able to select "UNLV & CSN Libraries" under Search Criteria. After selecting "UNLV & CSN Libraries" you will then have the option to select only UNLV or CSN from the Search Scope drop down, if desired.

After running your search and locating a book you wish to borrow, click on the book's title to open the record page. If you are not signed in to your Library Account, do so now. After you are signed in, you will be able to see a Request button on the record page. Select the Request button and follow the steps to request the book. 

Delivery of UNLV and CSN books takes 5-10 business days.  You will receive an email when the item is ready for pickup at the NS Library’s service desk.

Visiting UNLV or CSN Libraries:

You can go to UNLV or CSN Libraries to browse and borrow print books.  A valid Scorpion Card will be required for checkout. 

UNLV allows NS patrons in-person access to their online databases and collections.  Please ask at the UNLV Circulation desk for assistance when you arrive.
