Requesting Library Materials

The Library welcomes requests for collection additions on a rolling basis. While we cannot guarantee every request will be fulfilled, we do our best to accommodate them based on availability, licensing terms, and current budget priorities.

How to Submit a Request

If you'd like to request a book, journal, database, or other resource, please fill out our Resource Request Form. To help us process your request efficiently, please include as much detail as possible. We typically respond to requests within two business days. Purchasing timelines vary depending on resource type and availability. If you have any questions, please reach out to us at libraryacquisitions@nevadastate.edu.

What We Can Acquire

Ebooks

Ebooks are often the fastest and most accessible resources for us to purchase. For course-related materials, we prioritize titles with unlimited user access whenever possible to ensure all students have timely access.

Audiobooks

Some audiobooks may be available depending on vendor options. If you’re looking specifically for audio format, please indicate this in your request—we’ll do our best to locate available options.

Print Books

Print titles can be ordered for the library collection subject to availability and space restrictions, though please note that the Library is no longer hosting Course Reserves. The Library strongly prioritizes acquiring digital resources due to limited space for physical collections. Online formats ensure broader, more flexible access for the university community.

Films and Streaming Media

The Library can typically acquire films and streaming media for instructional use. Please be aware that streaming rights and licensing terms vary, and not all films are available for library purchase or classroom use. Visit our Film Licensing & Streaming Media page for more information on requesting media titles.

Journals and Databases

Resources that require ongoing funding commitments—such as databases, journal packages, and other subscription-based materials—require additional planning, coordination, and budgetary approval due to their recurring costs. Please allow ample time for evaluating these requests.

For more information about collection acquisitions, see the Collection Development Policy and Procedures.

Interlibrary Loan

The University Library offers Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services, which allow Nevada State students, faculty, and staff to borrow books, articles, and other materials from other libraries. This is a great option for one-time research needs or accessing hard-to-find items.

However, ILL is not recommended for materials needed as part of a class, such as required readings, because loan periods are limited and availability can vary. If you need something for instructional use, we encourage you to fill out the Resource Request Form instead so we can try to add it to the Library’s collection.

Learn more about using ILL on our Interlibrary Loan page.

Film Licensing & Streaming Media

The Library provides access to the streaming platforms below. These platforms host hundreds of educational films, documentaries, and videos that can be integrated into your courses.

Requesting a Film

If you would like the Library to acquire a specific film for your class, fill out our Resource Request Form.

A library team member will follow up with you to assist with your request. If the film is available, we will add it to the library collection and send you the streaming link to share with your students.

Have questions? Reach out to us at libraryacquisitions@nevadastate.edu. We're happy to help!

Important Notes

  • Streaming availability depends on licensing terms and cost. We will communicate with you if there are any issues and help explore alternative options.

  • Many streaming licenses are time-limited and may expire or be removed from platforms.

  • To ensure uninterrupted access, we recommend submitting new or repeat requests before the start of each semester, especially for titles used in previous courses.

Linking to Library Resources

Library resources such as articles, ebooks, and databases are only accessible to Nevada State students, faculty, and staff. You must sign in to view them, which means that simply copying the URL from your browser won’t always work for others or on different devices.

To share links that work reliably, use the permanent URL (aka permalink) provided by the library resource. Whenever possible, we recommend linking to the item’s record in the Library Search tool, as described below.

How to Locate a Permalink in Library Search

Step 1

The simplest way to locate a permalink is through the Library Search. To get started, look for an item you want using the Library Search. Your results should look something like this:

Step 2

Next, select the Permalink icon for the item you want to share:

Step 3

A permalink URL will be revealed on the click. You can copy the link to your clipboard by selecting the "Copy the Permalink to Clipboard" button:

Linking to Library Resources FAQ

You say copying the browser URL will not ALWAYS work. Are there cases where it will?

Yes. Some library resources like JSTOR, Ebook Central, and ProQuest have stable URLs that will work if copied directly from the browser window.

How can I test my URL to make sure it will work for other people?

The easiest way is to copy the URL into the private browsing or incognito mode of your web browser. You can also clear your cache and cookies and then try the URL.

What if I want to share a library resource with someone outside of Nevada State University?

Usually it is best to just provide a citation, and have the person look up the resource at their own library for access. If your sharing falls within U.S. Copyright and Fair Use laws you could download the article or chapter and send the person a copy.
